I utilize primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). These essentially hold that the key to emotional and behavioral change lies in addressing their underlying thought patterns and core beliefs, which have become in some way counterproductive for the client. This approach recognizes that one's core beliefs lead to everyday thoughts, which in turn lead to one's emotional states. These emotions then motivate one's behavior. I am able to address a wide variety of client issues, if not all issues, through these methods. However, practically speaking I also am a firm believer in "what works"--provided all legal and ethical boundaries are preserved and the client approves. This is because each person's psychological makeup is unique, and unique issues require unique solutions. "What Works" might include our exploring existential concerns, psychodynamics toward gaining insight into interpersonal behavior, Gestalt approaches, or Solution-Focused problem solving, among others. This use of a variety of theoretical orientations is called "Eclectic Therapy," and is recognized and supported by the American Counseling Association (ACA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the general psychotherapeutic community.
